Are You Ready for “Go Set a Watchman”?
It has been 55 years since Harper Lee’s debut and only novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and she stated that it would be her last. It was an instant success and has been a beloved piece of literature that taught us about social inequality, the importance of moral education, and the coexistence of good and evil. When the author announced the publication of her second book earlier this year, it brought much excitement to most bookworms. “Go Set a Watchman” has been said to be a sequel set 20 years after the events of Lee’s previous book though in reality, it was written a decade before. Her editor back then suggested that she write another book telling the story that we all know instead of having this one published. The original manuscript was then lost for years until Lee’s lawyer discovered it in 2014.
Despite the great anticipation for its release, there has been quite some controversies surrounding the timing of its publication. Because Lee had said multiple times throughout the years that she would not release another book, some speculated that she may have been taken advantage of. At 89 years of age, it was believed that she did not have full control of the decisions that were made regarding the book deal and was forced into it. Luckily, after conducting an investigation concerning those claims, the state of Alabama confirmed that it wasn’t true at all. All the fans that encouraged the boycott of “Go Set a Watchman” due to those allegations can now purchase the book starting tomorrow, July 14th at their local bookstore or online without feeling any kind of guilt.
I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of this book BUT as with all new releases, “Go Set a Watchman” will first come out in hardcover. As mentioned in one of my previous blog posts, I prefer paperback versions simply because I dislike the paper cover that most hardback books come with. Why can’t they simply print the beautiful cover ON the cover and not a piece of paper? (nevermind my OCD tendencies)
Did you pre-order yourself a copy of Harper Lee’s second best-selling novel? Do you think it was a good move by the editor and Lee to have the story begin in a chronological order? You can read or listen to the first chapter here!
As always, happy reading! *xXx*
